The 27th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 10, 1861.
The regiment was mustered out on September 20, 1864 at Springfield, Illinois. The veterans and recruits from this regiment were transferred to the 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
The regiment suffered 7 officers and 96 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 2 officers and 83 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 188 fatalities.[1]
